Dearborn/Melvindale Fire Department merger still going strong after first year

Melvindale officials are projecting a $500,000 savings in the first year. The actual savings total was not available at press time. The city will have additional staffing and rigs at its station, which the city is renting to Dearborn for $1 a year, and additional firefighters will be available. At least 17 firefighters from three stations are dispatched to every fire.

At 12:50 August 24th, Truck 1, Squad A, Engine 3, Engine 2 and the Battalion were dispatched to the Salvation Army building downtown for a reported structure fire.  Heavy smoke was encountered upon entry and SqA pulled their crosslay.  The fire was discovered towards the back of the first floor and was quickly knocked down.

Norwich Local 892 was able to raise $13,600 for MDA during our annual fill-the-boot drive.  The citizens and commuters of Norwich were very generous and we thank them for their help.
28 Squire St

At 3:17 am on 8/22/14 a neighbor called in a smoke detector sounding at 28 Squire St. When units arrived, tenants had not yet evacuated the structure. Fire was showing in a second floor window at the rear of the house. Forcible entry was made and a search for occupants found four adults that were still sleeping and unaware of the fire or alarm.
Recovery Operations 8/21/14

New London Firefighters assisted by numerous agencies and a good Samaritans personal boat searched for the body of a male who had jumped off the Southbound side of the Gold Star Bridge. State Police divers recovered the body after recovery dogs and side scan sonar(used by the State Police boat and Mystics Fire boat) came up with hits in the same area.

House Fire Claims Life In Sorrento

Lake County Firefighters responded to a house fire Wednesday afternoon off Vine Street in Sorrento. The first arriving firefighters arrived in just minutes but flames and smoke were already pouring out of the house bedroom window and roof. Neighbors called the fire in when they discovered the blaze.

Brother Joshua Clements passed away August 21, 2014. Arrangements will be held at the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home in Bolivar. Last Alarm will be held on Tuesday August 26,2014 at 1645 hours. Calling hours will immediately follow from 1700-2000 hours. Funeral service will be Wednesday August 27, 2014 at 1100 hours with Pastor Jacob Ley officiating. Burial will take place at the East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia.

Christopher Van Loo appointed as Saginaw's new fire chief

  SAGINAW, MI — After about three years without a full chief at the helm, the Saginaw Fire Department now has a new head officer in Christopher Van Loo. Van Loo, who has been serving as acting chief since September 2013, has been appointed chief of the department by City Manager Tim Morales, according to a press release from the city of Saginaw.
